Editors Note: Airstream announced the Caravan to Carbon Neutral campaign in a Feb. 11 press release.
What’s the biggest moral struggle of living in an Airstream full time? Quite often, it’s the environmental impact of driving one, especially for outdoors enthusiasts, who are often extra conscious of climate change’s impacts.
With this in mind, Airstream has announced a plan to counter their environmental impact: Caravan to Carbon Neutral. Airstream will donate money to plant 118,405 new trees in National Forests to the National Forest Foundation, which Airstream says will offset all carbon emissions resulting from all its motorhomes and trailers sold in 2021.
Airstream owners can also purchase silver, gold, or platinum Carbon Reduction Kits that will offset additional emissions by planting even more trees. Kit owners will be applauded by Airstream with custom decals and flags to display on their vehicles.
Airstream is notorious for incorporating the feedback of its customers and customer council, and found in a 2020 survey of Airstream owners that 96% are concerned about the environment.
CEO Bob Wheeler is an executive committee member on the board of directors for the National Forest Foundation, likely forging the avenue Airstream chose to attempt a positive environmental impact.
This isn’t the brand’s first involvement with the National Forest Foundation. During the 2019 government shutdown, Airstream launched the Campsite Cleanup Campaign to help clean areas of National Forest land affected by the shutdown.
