Leveling Your Travel Trailer

Leveling your travel trailer when you get to your destination is a great way to ensure comfort and stability. However, those without automatic leveling systems often find the process time-consuming and frustrating. That’s why Airstream of Vermont has created this guide to faster and easier travel trailer leveling.

Find a Suitable Location

The process of leveling your travel trailer goes much smoother if you pick a suitable location. Flat ground is best since you don’t have to try to compensate for uneven terrain. Terrain like sand or gravel that can shift under the weight of your travel trailer should also be avoided. All in all, a concrete slab is usually your best bet. If conditions are poor, do your best with what is available to you.

Level from Side to Side

When you arrive at your site, use a level to determine which side of your travel trailer will need to be raised and by how much. Move your RV and tow vehicle forward and place leveling blocks or boards at the places where your tires will eventually go. You should then back up and check to see if things are even. Repeat the process, adjusting each time, until you’re confident that things are even from side to side. You can then secure the wheels and disconnect your tow vehicle.

Level from Front to Back

Luckily, leveling from front to back is a much easier process. Just keep adjusting the hitch using your jack until the level tells you that things are even. Once you’re done, lock your hitch.

Stabilize

Lastly, you’ll need to stabilize your trailer to help make sure that everything stays level. Some models have automatic jacks while others require a special tool. Whichever type you own, make sure that your jacks are firmly pressing into the ground without shoving into it. While it may be tempting to simply use your jacks to level your travel trailer, we recommend against this. Your jacks are not designed to adjust to weight, only support it. An adjustment to one jack will usually require adjustments to the other three jacks, making the whole process take longer.
