Single Axle vs. Tandem Axle, What's the Difference?

Single axle or double axle? What’s an axle? Here’s how to determine these answers on your Airstream. 

Google defines an axle as “a rod or spindle (either fixed or rotating) passing through the center of a wheel or group of wheels.” 

Here we see a tandem axle, where there are two axles on a single travel trailer, right next to each other. This creates more strength in the Airstream’s frame to hold up more weight, typically for larger travel trailers than a single axle would hold. 

Here on the Airstream Bambi, we see a single axle, which is attached to a visible smaller travel trailer. But what else separates these features?

According to the Airstream website, “Single-axle travel trailers range from 16 to 22 feet in length. To put that into context, an average car is around 15 feet long, while trucks are generally around 20 feet long. So, single-axle travel trailers aren’t much longer than your average vehicle on the road.”

In contrast, double axle travel trailers range from 23 to 33 feet in length. That’s the length of some dinosaurs!
